Repeating Commands

"Why is it important to not repeat commands while I'm training my dog?"   (New!  3/2/04)

There are a few reasons why repeating commands over and over and over and over... is not a good habit to get into while training your dog.

bulletThe first reason is that if you tell your dog to sit 5 times before he actually sits, you've allowed him to ignore the first 4 commands you gave him.  Making commands optional is one way of losing your dog's respect and obedience.  It gives him the option of obeying your repeated commands whenever he feels like it.

bulletThe second reason is that if you nag, nag, nag... your dog is more than likely going to start ignoring you just because you're a nag.  ;-)

Ask him to do something, then make sure he complies.
